Secret Pal Questionnaire

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely not like?

My favorites are merino and baby alpaca.  I love single-ply bulky yarns for baby blankets & for felting.  I also really like mirasol hacho which is totally at the other end of the spectrum, I think it’s a 7 ply (?) dk weight merino which I love for leg & arm warmers.  I don’t use synthetics at all and haven’t ventured much into blends. Bright cottons for some summer knitting would be nice too~ purple, teal, mustard.

What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a very ugly, not very sturdy clear vinyl zip bag that my options needles came in.  Everything is crammed in there.

How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I’ve been knitting 2 years.  I taught myself with some help from online tutorials & a couple of books.  I guess I’m in between beginner & intermediate.  I don’t really use patterns, but just kind of try to work things out in my head before I start in on them.  I don’t do anything super complicated, and I like simple projects.  Baby longies, blankets, hats, scarves, legwarmers & fingerless mitts.

Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

also an amazon list

What’s your favorite scent?

Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I totally have a sweet tooth.  I like plain organic milk chocolate. Caramels, homemade marshmallows.

What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I’ve hand carded some wool and tried spinning with a drop spindle, but quickly got frustrated.  I do believe it was partially the type of wool I was trying with~ Icelandic?  I think I’ll probably try again in the future with a wheel, but have lots of other things on my plate right now.  I sew & occasionally do some papercrafts, but right now I’m mostly focusing on knitting because it travels well and I can do it without lugging out lots of paraphenalia.

What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I like funky girl bands, and 90’s music.  Yes, I can play MP3s.

What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand?

My favorite colors are combos of reds/pinks/oranges.  Also blue/greens/teals. Purples.  And I like really faint natural pastels (baby pink, sage green, light blue, tan)  when used in combination & when the fiber is special.  I like straight black, but don’t like grey/black/white combos right now.

What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I’ve been married 14 years this year, have 5 kids and  a hamster.

Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

I rarely wear scarves, occasionally wear beanie or beret type hats, would wear mittens or gloves if I had them, and I don’t wear ponchos, but my daughter does and loves them. (Size 4T-5T)

What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

leg/arm warmers, baby blankets, felted bowls & bags

What are you knitting right now?

Baby longies, leg warmers, felted bowls 🙂

Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

I LOVE them

Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

Circs.  I like the addi turbos I’ve used the best, though I’m not a stickler about it, and bamboo is fine.  I’ve not tried plastic.

Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

How old is your oldest UFO?

A couple of weeks.  Normally if I haven’t finished something in a month, off it comes.  I really like short projects, things I can finish in a handfull of sittings, otherwise I get bored with it and move on to something else.  I guess I’m an immediate gratification kind of girl.

What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

We celebrate the seasons, so pagan-themed, though we celebrate winter on Christmas Day instead of the Solstice.  My favorite holiday….I really like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas & my birthday.  So basically October through January!

Is there anything that you collect?

Not really, I’m pretty minimalistic & clutter bums me out.

Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I like knitting books with an emphasis on toys & small scale projects.  I don’t have any knitting books, so no need to worry about buying me something I already have.  I have to say I don’t like old fashioned 70’s style books in black & white. The 100purewool 3 ply worsted looks like it comes in some fun color combos.  I’d like something bulky & feltable so I can make hotmitts.  No patterns that I know of, and I don’t have any knitting magazine subscriptions.

Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?

Hmmmm, I guess not right now.  Cables don’t currently interest me.  Like I said, I keep it pretty simple, ribbing excites me, LOL.

Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Not yet.  I’d like to try though! Oh, maybe a sock pattern for some of those 9″ circs?  If there is a pattern for a dk weight sock, maybe on a size 4 needle, I may be able to swing something like that.  I don’t think I’m quite ready to delve into anything too tiny & I don’t like magic loop.  I wear an 8.5 or 39.

When is your birthday?

Are you on Ravelry? If so, what’s your ID?

I’m rajahkat on Ravelry, and I’m not on knitpicks.

Birthday Fun

Yesterday was birthday #32 for me!  And I have to honestly say I think it was the best one I’ve ever had. 🙂  Chris made me breakfast in bed & spoiled me rotten with beautifully wrapped gifts & lovely food.  He baked a white chocolate raspberry cake from scratch & picked out a new platform bed & gorgeous linens.  I’m really looking forward to my 2 week “lying in” when the new babe comes.  He picked out 3 skeins of awesome yarn from Imperial Stock Ranch too, and bought me 6 new circs.  And the kids made a huge banner with their art kits & they were all bathed with clean hair & brushed teeth on the same day!  Seriously folks, I know those of you with more than the average 2 kids know what a joy this can be.

And some of my gifts.

Baby Things

I think I currently have 3 separate pairs of longies OTN and for some reason just don’t want to finish them.  Combine that with the 12 newborn cloth diapers I need to finish and I feel like I’m drowning in things that need to get done.  Did I mention I’m quickly approaching 37 weeks pregnant?  Oh lordy, why don’t I have a crafty mother or mother in law near by?The Newborn Longies~ Knit on Size 6 12in circs.  I LOVE these things!

Last Minute Baby Blanket in the softest baby alpaca ever!  Unfortunately this stuff was spendy and I still need two more hanks to finish it up.  I love the colors in this yarn though, and the camera really doesn’t do it justice.

More longies, these are on size 8 circs, 16in for the body & 12in for the legs.  These are super quick, IMO, so why oh why don’t I want to finish them?!?

Again on 8s, I loved the color combo of these two yarns, a spicy selection of mustard & paprika!

Fingerless Mitts

Twenty degrees so might as well stay in and knit, right?  First mitt is done!  I’m using my 9 inch circs for these and I’m loving how easy-peasy they are.  I’m thinking perfect for knitting Cedar some leg warmers too.  Basically exactly the same process, just simple ribbing and no thumb hole.  This merino feels amazing!

What exactly does one DO with pumpkin butter?

Since I’ve made jars and jars of the stuff to give as gifts.

Some great recipes here:

Canned Goods

Apple Butter…..

And Pumpkin Butter…..

and caramel sauce!

It was a busy week with the husband out of town.  I did manage to get pumpkin butter all over the ceiling in the kitchen.  You’ve really got to cook that stuff down so it thickens up nicely, and in the process, it can POP!  I’m thinking pumpkin & cheese danish for breakfast one day soon.
